Sure - it will bless her heart PARTICULARY because you haven't spoken to her for awhile.
Our real grief very often doesn't settle in until a month or even months and months after the death of a loved one. I volunteer at a grief center as a grief peer counselor and I know for a fact how much it means to receive a sympathy card even months after a loved ones death.

Sending a sympathy card would be a great idea. My past boyfriend died in a hiking accident, and I found my friends' concerns very therapeutic, even though I haven't spoke to them in years.

Since it's been a year and a half since you've spoken to her - you should just send her a card that says "thinking of you" or "let's catch up" or something of that nature. If she responds, then you can personally offer your condolences.

If I got a sympathy card from someone who I haven't spoken to in over a year about my grandmother who died months ago - I would think it was weird.

Absolutely! Even if you haven't talked to her in a long time, its always nice to know you still care about her. I lost touch with so many people from high school but if something terrible happen I always said my condolences. I would want the same in return! Knowing an old friend still cares, at a really rough time in your life is a great thing!

Get one of the "I'm thinking of you" cards and right her a little note. Better late than never, even if it has been 1 1/2 years.
