Two wks ago, according to the u/s, my baby weighted 7.5 lbs. I'm 38 wks, as of yesterday, & my Dr. wants to induce. In fact, he wanted to do it tomorrow and I opted to make an appt to see where I was instead. I was hoping to go into labor before then & even had sex w/my husband yesterday hoping to put me there. Instead, I ended up with menstral like cramps and a backache. Even though they were coming every so many minutes, & VERY painful (in my back especially), according to the machine I wasn't having ANY contractions!! Now, I'm going to have to go to the Dr. & make a decision in regards to the induction and I'm scared to death. I've read about the risks & I know it can cause the contractions to be more painful. Sunday, I was convinced I wanted to - but now I'm not so sure again. I was hoping I could get some words of wisdom from other mom's out there who have been in this position.

I had to be induced as well. My body never went into labor and I was 10 days late. The biggest risk factor of induction is the Pitocin. Make sure they're constantly monitoring you and your baby once they start it. My father is a lawyer and did a string of lawsuits of stillborns because the uterus over-contracted and killed the babies. Now things have changed ALOT since then. The second my daughter's heartrate dropped they lowered my Pitocin. I wound up having to have a C-Section. Another risk of induction: there's is a much higher rate of c-section with induction. But to be honest, I was in inactive labor for 18 hours with mild contractions and they asked if I wanted to keep trying for natural or go to plan B...after 18 hours I wussed out and went to Plan B and had the C-Section. Now my best friend she went in two weeks early for induction and everything went smoothly and she wound up having a natural delivery within 5 hours of getting into the hospital. The main thing, never be alone...you get better care from the nurses and doctors if someone is with you the whole time, statistics have proven it. It all depends on you and your body. Everyone reacts differently to things. Induction is risky but sometimes in the end it's worth it. I personally would try to wait it out as long as you can but if you're ready to get it done and over with then go for it!

I am so sorry for all these other women, for my first child, I was induced at 38 weeks and I had no problems. I arrived at the hospital at 530 am and had my daughter 1130 the next day. They started the pitocin in the evening and I recieved another pain medication that evening to help me with my contractions. I felt nothing, I just watched the monitor to see my contraction and felt my stomach tightening. I recieved my epidural at about 11 that night and still felt nothing. I wen to sleep and woke up the next morning. Once I was dilated far enough, they asked if I wanted to start pushing at about 10:30 I started and they ruptured my waters and I pushed my daughter out without a hitch. I used a mirror to guide me through it. I liked the induction because I felt like I had alot of control over my birth. I was really calm the whole time and the situation turned out great. Good Luck to you, I hope your birth experience will be as joyful as mine was.

I didn't have a choice, my stupid doctor (military!) let me go 3 weeks past due with my first son. I was MISERABLE, and still had a terrible labor - had my membranes stripped twice, and a little over 40 hours of labor.

My sister had an induction about 5 days before her due date, and 8 hours later was sitting there with a beautiful baby boy.

I'll give you 3 guesses which one I would choose.... As a matter of fact, I have chosen, based on my medical history with my son, my doctor's scheduled an induction for December 18th, and I am quite calm and happy about this decision.

Birth is a personal choice and I'd never presume to tell you how you should do it. However, if your doctor thinks that an induction is a safe way for you and your baby to have the best treatment, I'd give it serious thought!

All of my labors have been induced or progressed using pitocen, breaking my waterbag, pulling the cervix, even nipple stimulation. most of my labors just started out slow, the Dr just wanted to move things along. I have 7 kids. All of my labors have been painfull. Never had an epidural, just demoral. Inducing labor is quite common, and I have never had a problem, just shorter labors! :)
