Theoreticsal Physics is the brach of study which relies on pure thought and mathematics to study the nature of the universe...as opposed to experimental physics which uses measurements and observations to form and prove theory.

Well this is just a theory, but I believe it is using physics to explore the true unknowns in our universe, and subjecting any ideas or theories to the scrutiny of physics to get an accurate answer.
