80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

There's no meaning to life. You do however have the power to give yours a purpose. What that should be is up to you.

Personally I think some people just never think of such questions - they just get on with it. Others worry about them all the time. I think a middle way is about right. Give the matter some thought (after all, you have a brain so why not use it) but don't knock yourself out if you aren't always 'on the path'.

Personally I get a kick out of helping people and just enjoying the joys of life. But what I think is unimportant. It's your life - you choose.

in hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, 42 is given as the answer to the question of the meaning of life, the universe and everything. so, the meaning of life could be 14 if each of the three concepts are given equal weight. of course, the three concepts might indeed have different weightings and, for instance, the universe could be 18, everything let's say 20, resulting in the meaning of life being a paltry 4. now that doesn't seem right to me so someone should develop a mathematical method for determining the most likely value of one of three shares of a whole. don't you think ?

42

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a concept for a science-fiction comedy radio series pitched by Adams and radio producer Simon Brett to BBC Radio 4 in 1977. Adams came up with an outline for a pilot episode, as well as a few other stories (reprinted in Neil Gaiman's book Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion) that could potentially be used in the series.

According to Adams, the idea for the title The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy occurred to him while he lay drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria (though he joked that the BBC would instead claim it was Spain "probably because it's easier to spell"), gazing at the stars. He had been wandering the countryside while carrying a book called the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe when he ran into a town where, as he humorously describes, everyone was either "deaf" and "dumb" or only spoke languages he couldn't. After wandering around and drinking for a while, he went to sleep in the middle of a field and was inspired by his inability to communicate with the townspeople. He later said that due to his constantly retelling this story of inspiration, he no longer had any memory of the moment of inspiration itself, and only remembered his retellings of that moment. A postscript to M. J. Simpson's biography of Adams, Hitchhiker, provides evidence that the story was in fact a fabrication and that Adams had conceived the idea some time after his trip around Europe.

well to cut a long story short it is 42

just follow his example, roll around in a field drunk, write and get paid well for it, or if you can't do that , just make it all up, and sell that story instead.

It's simple....there is no meaning. Don't look for meaning, just live. Live life like there is no tomorrow. Love, respect, and help anyone you can.
