You need to ensure that all other food is removed from their access, this means locking up all your jammie dodgers, leave nothing out overnight, make sure you clean up thoroughly after meals, sandwiches etc.. put all your veg out of reach, if they don't eat your bait, they are getting it from elsewhere, Mice do not tend to store food, unlike Rats, then check that the active ingredient is one that will do the job,ie Difenecoum, or Bromadialone, one of the anticoagulants, don't use Alphachlorilose, as it reduces body temperature and kills by Hypothermia, not that effective if you have your central heating on and you probably do this time of year
Then make sure that you follow the instructions on the box, exclude the poison from ALL others,Children and Pets.
Put down several baits as mice like to feed from little bits here and there, make sure if it is taken, you keep topping it up, until no more is taken.
Traps with peanut butter are fine for small numbers, you could try them first, but be prepared to find live injured mice, which you will have to dispatch humanely. but unless you know this, bait is best.
Be prepared you may get a smell.
If you do this you should resolve the problem.

Watch what bait you buy it may read ""may take several feedings before killing". I prefer one that reads "One feeding may be enough to Kill". It maybe that they are eating it but it is the wrong kind. I have feed the mice the first kind for weeks and they still didn't die. They could have a large supply of food they prefer over the bait. Keep everything clean and try a different kind of bait.

Set out some traps with peanut butter on them. The mice cannot resist that.

Don't disappear this is a common problem they will not take any bait from strangers, it is just the way they have been brought up ( NOT TO TAKE FOOD FROM STRANGERS) you need to befriend them first to gain there trust then offer them some cheese it at this point you can hit them with a hammer....
