You just answered your own question! Doing that could and will cause problems for your baby. If you want to get more sleep for yourself, ask a family member or friend to watch your baby for a little while. If you are asking because your baby won't sleep-then you need to talk to the pediatrician.
Giving a baby Benadryl without a doctor's advice is 100% child abuse. There is no excuse for that-NONE>>>>>

Benadryl is a medication used for allergies, not for getting your baby to sleep, although it does make some babies drowsy. It is dangerous to misuse any type of medication especially on someone who is very young. Benadryl only MAY causes drowsiness. For some babies and children Benadryl can cause hyperactivity. It affects my youngest daughter in that way.

Just what happens. Nothing is predictable with babies and schedules usually change. The baby may be teething. My son did the same. We thought we were so lucky to have a baby that sleeps through the night so early. Now he is 8 months old and I am up twice a night. It started when he was teething. It is hard for them to sleep and they do not want to eat either. I hope things go back to normal for you and me both soon.. :) Maybe try a lil tylenol before bed. Keeping a child up longer during the day to try to make hi tired will only make it worse. They get over tired and can not wind down and scream and scream and scream

You need to talk to your doctor about this sleeping issue. Benadryl is NOT the answer and it should never be given to kids under 6 without first talking to a doctor. How do you even know how much to give? Its no on the bottle for kids under 6!!

I believe no meds should be given except in situations where it is 100% a must. This is NOT one of those situations

Benadryl is an anticyclonic. It will dehydrate your baby (which can cause death) and can cause the brain to misfire (similar to Alzheimer's).
You can't reasonably give your child any drug to make him sleep. If you are having troubles, talk to your doctor. He/She will have much better advice than giving benadryl. Get support from anyone before you give your baby drugs (even over the counter drugs).

i don't know about that but i would not give benadryl to make my baby sleep. I think drugging up your child is wrong. Yes you may be sleep deprived but that is what we signed up for there has to be a no medicine way to help them and if not you just need to tough it out till they sleep through the night

Are you asking whether or not you should drug your baby to put it to sleep? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Your baby should never take benadryl unless it's sick and the doctor has instructed you to do so. Just because you can't get your baby to sleep, doesn't mean you should drug him/her. If your baby is having trouble sleeping, see a doctor and find out what's wrong. It could be a number of things. That's a silly reason to drug your baby.

Stop the Benadryl!!! Please. Remember you are a mom and if you have to get up in the night to comfort or feed then that is what you must do. Mom's make sacrifices for their children. They don't drug them so that they the mom can get sleep.
My first child was a horrible sleeper and in time he grew out of it. It took a lot of getting up at night but, we survived it. You can too. Ask your doctor for some suggested reading or ask if anyone out here in Yahoo-land can suggest some good reads.
Please whatever you do stop the Benedryl, OK.

I wouldn't give a baby anything just to make it go to sleep. A baby is a baby and that is just the way it is. They sleep and they don't but you can't dope it up to get it to go to sleep. If there is a medical reason to have to give the baby Benadryl and a pediatrician told you to use it then ok but to use it to get the baby to go to sleep is wrong! JMO!

I hate hearing about hearing people drug children for their own convenience.

I understand the urge, TRUST ME. But in the end the risks are not worth the benefits EVER!! Plus the way you teach your children to sleep now will follow them the rest of their lives.

(Oh and I agree with the person who said it is child abuse and that they should be kicked in the face. Also it violates medical ethics and no doctor should promote it, because no one can be forced to undertake a medical procedure for the benefit of another and this extends to taking medication.)

--------------------------
Edited to add:

In defence of this person many people do this and recommend it to others. And in fact I have heard of doctors recommending it for sleep issues for toddlers, and for babies during travel, particularly by plane.

Personally I would like to kick such doctors in the face, or at least see them sent for "re-education". This is why people must believe that they have to question everything a doctor says. (Like the doctor who came highly recommended who told me to night-wean my 2 month old, yes TWO MONTH OLD! Even though I did not ask for breastfeeding advice and was seeing a qualified lactation consultant who was far more qualified to make any sort of suggestions.

Please the next time your doctor says something you question think back to this person. I know this is getting waaay off topic, but seriously. His/Her doctor could very well have suggested this. Never do anything just because your doctor says to.
