Hazards Of Tongue Piercing
Main Category: Dentistry News
Article Date: 19 Mar 2006 - 13:00pm (PST)

Body piercing is popular today in the United States and other western societies. One common type of body piercing is tongue piercing, which involves placing a "barbell"-type stud through the tongue. But wearing a tongue stud puts people at risk for chipped teeth, recessed gums, and nerve damage, warns the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).
However, most people don't realize that getting an oral piercing also places them at risk for developing a fatal infection or, in some cases, a mini-tongue, according to a report in the January/February 2006 issue of General Dentistry, the AGD's clinical, peer-reviewed journal.

In the report, a young woman's pierced tongue developed a large, round lump adjacent to the piercing. The lump, which she called her "second tongue," didn't hurt, nor was it infected, but it was growing. This mass was determined to be a scar tissue formation. Improvement was noted after oral hygiene was increased (frequent use of mouthwash and hydrogen peroxide mouthwash) and the tongue stud was replaced with a shorter shaft.

"Keep the wound clean. Make sure the bar is short so food and bacteria won't enter the site," advises Ellis Neiburger, DDS, lead author of the study. "Replace the metal barbell heads with plastic ones."

The number of adults between ages 21 and 31 who have their tongue pierced continues to increase, notes Melvin K. Pierson, DDS, FAGD, AGD spokesperson, despite his efforts to educate his patients about the dangers.

Although this article cited an extreme case, there are some very common dangers associated with tongue piercing. Unclean piercing equipment can cause other infections, such as bloodborne hepatitis. Also, if a patient is not instructed to avoid touching the piercing, they might spread infections with their own fingers.

"I see a lot of damage caused by piercing---tooth fractures, tooth chips. Patients don't see the relation between them and piercing, which weakens the tooth. The damage is almost always in the pre-molars, the middle teeth, almost parallel to the piercing," says Dr. Pierson. "The best way to prevent damage is to not get your tongue pierced."

"I don't recommend piercing," says Dr. Pierson. "Because of the risks associated with this unregulated procedure, if someone is considering an oral piercing, he or she should discuss it with their medical or dental professional."

Hazards of tongue piercing:
# Infection due to unsterile instruments.
# Pierced blood vessel or artery.
# Development of scar tissue.
# Tooth fractures and chips.

I went to this place when I had my eyebrow done. they were really good.

ORAL PIERCINGS
Tongue
Clean mouth with full strength Listerine or a 50/50 solution of Listerine and water. For the next two and half (2 1/2)weeks,after eating, drinking, smoking, etc you must clean your mouth with the Listerine.Along with reaped cleaning with the Listerine, you must also apply Glyoxide twice (2) a day to the piercing, by putting a couple of drops on the top and bottom of your tongue piercing, letting it to fizz, and rinsing your mouth. DO NOT SWALLOW ANYTHING USED TO CLEAN YOUR TONGUE. Brushing after every meal will help to maintain cleanliness.

Discomfort during the first 2-4 days is common. Soft, bland foods are most comfortable for people during the first week. Spicy, acidic, or hot foods are most likely to be uncomfortable as are sodas and alcohol. Most people can eat drink whatever they wish after the first 7-10 days. Trying to eat solid foods too soon, especially spicy or hard food may damage the piercing.

Check the ball(s) regularly to make sure that they are tight. Be sure to use latex barrier between your mouth and anyone else's body fluids until the piercing has healed (6-8 weeks). Avoid oral sex for at least 2 weeks: avoid pulling on the barbell until the piercing is totally healed.

GENERAL: Mouth piercings cause the surrounding tissues to swell during the first few days. Swelling time is typically 2-3 days, but varies by person and how closely you follow the aftercare instructions. As tempting as i might be DO NOT REMOVE THE JEWELRY. The discomfort is temporary, and you'll have it all again to reinsert the jewelry.Especially for tongue piercings, you may not be able to speak clearly. If possible schedule the piercing for when you have a day or two off work or school, have someone available to answer the telephone ,etc. The more you talk th e longer the swelling lasts.

The jewelry is sized to allow for swelling. Many people find that is still comfortable after the swelling disappears, although it may feel loose till you get used to it. If it feel uncomfortably long, you may replace it with a shorter barbell ( careful about metals and allergies )after the piercing is healed (usually 2-3 weeks). Do not replace the jewelry with any item that is not specifically for mouth piercings.

NOTE: Mouth piercings tend to close very quickly when the jewelry is removed. They can close in as little as 20 minutes, even for well-aged peircings .When you remove jewelry for cleaning, etc. Replace it promptly. If the piercing closes, you must have it re pierced- and go through the healing period again. If you must remove the jewelry (e.g. for a dental appointment) call us for advice first.

FOOD: Cold liquids (milk shakes, etc.)and especially crushed ice will help decrease the swelling.

It does Hurt, but it is different for everyone. When you first get it you will need to keep a bottle of Listerine with you at all times. Your tongue can get infected easily if you don't clean your mouth after you eat drink or smoke. Also be very careful wear you get it done. Make sure the place is respectable and you have seen some of there other work. Also the closer the piercing is to the tip of your tongue the more it will hurt. there are more nerves at the tip of your tongue.

It was very painfull , it made me talk with a gay sounding lisp for almost a year, I chipped a tooth on the ball trying to eat pizza , did I say it hurt like hell ?? I went with it for almost two years and it never did feel like it healed properly I couldnt extend my tounge without discofort , when I finially removed it it felt as if a giant splinter had been removed and it was very releving to have it start to heal , I think the general nature of your tounge is always trying to heal itself so it always seemed itchy , it wasnt like an ear or nipple pierceing where the hole kinda heals inside it is always gonna close if you take it out for more than a day, less in some cases .... I am into all kinds of different stuff , and I really didnt like it much , .........to each his own though if you do get it done and dont like it then just remove it, when I had it done it was 50.00 or 60.00 I cant remember ........good luck

Don't let them scare you sweetie!!!! It doesn't hurt as bad as you think it does first of all. It's mostly psychological. When i was in delivery with my baby, people told me it was the worst experience I'd ever be in,and they though because I'm a big whiner i wouldn't be able to stand the pain. But i just kept saying to myself,it COULD hurt worst, and it wouldn't hurt as bad.I was in labor for 12 hours....and could feel only about 3 of that,i never screamed, and i didn't have any pain medicine. When i heard the lady next door screaming her head off,it started to hurt,so i made my mom turn up the TV,and once her screams were gone,it didn't hurt anymore.....all they do is hold your tongue with some tongs, and then stick a needle through, and put the ring in.Its a quick process,so all you have to do is think good thought for about 30 seconds. Now afterward is a whole different story, your gonna feel pain, but you have to deal with it,but some people don't feel pain after wards, and you might be one of those many....I think you can do it,so good luck!

take tylonol beforehand, dont suck on anything after (candy, drink with straws etc) , no smoking, no beer drinking, beer has yeast and u'll get a yeast infection & no ORAL sex at least til the swelling goes down (you prolly wont want to go down anyway) this should be or not be done for 4 to 5 days after the piercing. and if you have to answer phones at work it will be difficult at 1st. dont remove the stud and keep it clean as much as possible. lastly be careful the 1st few times eating with a fork.....
go here to get your barbells if you work in the business world

when you get your tongue pierced it hurts for a few weeks. its very sensitive. you have to brush you teeth like 2-3 times a day and mouthwash that much also for a few weeks. you cant smoke for like a month because the fumes will get in the open hole and can cause infection. hope this helps.

I got mine done and it didn't hurt until a few hours later, but it wasn't too bad. Just make sure you go to a reputable piercer that uses sterile equipment. The artist should tell you everything you need to know, including cleaning instructions and maintainance tips.

Yes, I can. You will never get a normal, professional job as long as you have a visible tongue piercing.

Note: They are all visible as long as their is jewelry in them.

Don't do it.

Unless you want to work at McDonald's.
