I'm not that smart to walk away. I usually try to repair the stupid comment with a response that ends up making it worse.

Yes, I was explaining to a very religious woman I worked with how to make a certain dessert. I was always very cautious about my language around her out of respect! I was telling her to roll out the dough onto a "cookie sh!t". I about died! I went to the bathroom and couldn't make up my mind whether to laugh or cry! Later that day she walked past me and said, "What do I roll that out on?" with a big smile on her face!

If it is to just one person, I try to pretend that they have a hearing problem.

To a larger group, I pretend that I have a hearing problem and try to repeat myself.

Yes...and I'd like to say as I get older I don't do that as much - however, I do believe I'm doing it more often.
