A passive open is where you wait to accept a connection from another entity who wants to connect to you, unlike an active open where you ask for a specific entity.

A good analogy is your telephone: when you wait for your phone to ring, then answer it that is an active open. Someone else you waited for is calling you. An active open would be where you initiate the call and dial a specific number.
