If people are against gay marriage for moral reasons, why haven't they fought the government to outlaw divorce? If they are against it for tax reasons, why don;t they fight to get rid of tax benefits for marriage?

This isn't a question about gay marriage for those who didn't get that.

It's called Hypocrisy, yes, with the capital "H." Claiming stability and sanctity are part of marriage is more than disingenuous, it's moronic. Supporting a stand against gay marriage using the Bible is just as wrong as pretending your divorce doesn't count in the equation since you repented and married the right man or woman this time around. Morality is subjective to those who preach about it.

Marriage, in my opinion, is a matter of dedicated love. Unfortunately, the government wants its cut as well and thus, they make you get a license. From this, they deem it necessary to say who can and cannot be wed.

As a result of the ultra conservative movement, people are told that the church says no and thus we, the people of the nation, must also say no to homosexual unions. Our governemt is bowing to this christian pressure and is starting to incorporate religious values into its legal code. While some of it is necessary (murder, theft), the integrating of the christian churches with the government violates the US codification of seperation of church and state. Unfortunately, homophobia and ostricization rule the hearts and minds of the people of the US.

The worst part of this is that the anti-gay marriage amendments being drafted are usually an enforcement of a current law already in effect. And aside from that, the people are not fully informed of the full wording of the amendment. Most only want to see the part that says "Marriage is to be the union between one man and one woman". Here in Virginia, a second paragraph states that noone may have a contract that approximates the "institution" of marriage. This part effects both the homosexual couples as well as the heterosexual couples. It still passed due to fear that homosexuals will destroy one's marriage. Pathetic...

Marriage is the joining of minds, hearts, spirits, and lives between two people that dedicate these same things to each other.

As far as asking the government to outlaw divorce, watch. Someone will proposed it when they realize that the gay-marriage ban has not fixed the stability of everyone's marriages. And they would never think of dropping the tax credit. At least not until they define marriage as being allowed for only the procreation of a new life. When that happens, only those they see fit as procreating will be allowed. Bye bye freedom...

Many people believe that the "married-joint" filing status allows them to pay less in taxes than a "single" filing status. This is often far from the truth. Many also believe that the "married-joint" tax rates and exemptions are simply double that of the "single" rates and exemptions. This is also not true. Some of you out there, especially the confirmed single type, might giggle and think that marriage itself is all the penalty you could stand. While that might be true for you, many other folks, blissfully and eternally in love, have found that the wonderful state of matrimony has hiked their tax bill -- unexpectedly and, some may say, unnecessarily.

But what does being gay and fighting to outlaw divorce have to do with one another?

how is keeping two people together and ruining a kids life (why haven't they fought the government to outlaw divorce) moral? that makes no sense. And dont worry your dems are going to try to rid the us of tax benefits for marriage. You want to take anything that has an inkling of religion out of this country. You want to take away the rights that have been given to people that are based on religion to give rights to people thats beliefs arent. Is that not where the hypocrisy is?

and I hate religion but that just makes no sense.

It may be a matter of morals, it may be a matter of individual thinking from being raised to believe certain things, it may be education, it may be sexuality, but whatever it is, in American society today, divorce is more accepted than gay marriage, and whether or not you think that is consistant, the majority of American people feel that makes sense. And this is democracy, so you take the good with the bad

I wish they would get rid of marraige benefits. I think way too many people get married for the wrong reasons and then they end up getting divorced. I think if we stripped marraige down to just being purley two people who want to acknowledge their love for each other then so many people wouldnt be getting married for crazy reasons.

I can agree with some situations in which a partner might benefit from a marraige but I think it is out of hand.
