For saving what?
For graphics, .png files are preferred by many. .jpg files make smaller files but you lose some definition. .gif files are used for graphical animations.
For text, .pdf is generally the most widely accepted of the formatted text. For plain text, well .txt file are best.
For content, .html works simplest. For more complicated web content, you can use php, java, asp, python, perl, and a host of others.
For databases, a comma delimited format works best.

What type of files? .txt / .jpg / .bmp / .exe / .wpd etc... ???
