Martin Luther King gets his memorial on the National Mall. They say his dream has come true, but true equality is still squashed by President Bush and others. When we get true equality who will they allow us gays to put a statue of?

Rainbow? I think that would be pretty nice.

I heard and watched the presentation for the ground breaking ceremony this morning. As an Afro-American; I'm very proud. This man (Martin Luther King, Jr.) transcended race and was an outspoken person for equal rights, and civil rights for all people. The Bush Administration and war machine profiteers have an agenda other than humanity or equality. Its really a challenge to select a person or group of individuals to build a memorial for the gay community. Many worked feverishly behind the cloak and suffer without mention. Perhaps the day will come when a memorial will be dedicated the those of Stonewall.

No i like Martin Luther King. He grew to become into an inspirational guy or woman who peacefully performed a pass to maximum suitable between the main significant wrongs of our federal government. A predecessor to Henry David Thoreau and a real American patriot.

Interesting question. I think my response would be to place a statue that would be more symbolic than specific as the community has so many people who could be seen as pioneers. With that in mind, permit to offer this visual.

A statue of several ordinary people standing as if defending a cause, and in front, like the painting of "liberte de la paie" (the Liberty of France) a women and a man grasping the rainbow flag. This could be the symbolic statue of the Stonewall Riot or just symbolic of the struggle in general.

If you want a specific person, it would be difficult due to the many of which I spoke, but if need be:

Oscar Wilde
Harvey Milk
Matthew Sheppard (although this one would be awkward I suspect)
Harvey Fierstein (God knows he's done his bit for gays)

there are others but hopefully you get my point.

cheers

"Harvey Fierstein with a sack over his head"? I don't get it.
Ugly and gay are not statistically correlated to my knowledge.
Standards of beauty are affected by culture as much as by nature in any case. (Or was this a joke about stretching the envelope even so?)

He's deserving of a monument. There have been many great LGBT leaders who work for the cause, but none of true national name recognition as yet. Some day there will be.

They have already reserved a spot where plans are to have a prominent statuette of Truman Capote gazing fondly up at the Washington Monument.

As a counterpoint that emphasizes the true message, a figure of what appears to be Harvey Fierstein with a sack over his head is also in the planning stages.

Well, when all gays are a race and not an orientation, come back.

I am so hoping gay marriage gets approved. Why shouldn't gays be as miserable as the rest of us
