I just graduated from college...but my job pays well, I have full benefits, but I'd like to see what's out there. Should i tell my boss that I'm seeking another job...I mean I'll only leave if I find something that pays more and provides great benefits.

I wouldn't tell him yet! It wouldn't be a safe thing to do, because if he knows you're thinking about leaving, he may try to replace you before you're ready.

It is important to be honest with him, however, so I would only mention it when you begin having interviews or when something looks promising. You'd want a good reference from him, so being up front and honest about it when it really counts will gain some points with him. And don't leave him high and dry, either. When you do find something else, make sure to give him two weeks notice to find a replacement.

No, do NOT tell your boss that. If you do, then he will begin making plans to replace you. If he thinks that you're not committed to staying at this job, he's not going to trust you as much and it might even result in your termination of employment. You certainly wouldn't get promoted. And you may not find anything better, and then what? You'd have to go tell the boss, "Oh sorry, just kidding, I really do need this job...I'm not quitting after all." And that would be really embarrassing and not good for your work reputation. You would be seen as untrustworthy and wishy-washy. No, just keep it on the DL, and if you find something better and it's for sure, great. Then you can give your notice to the boss. But if not, then you'll still have your current job! Good luck.

what would be the reason you would want to tell your boss that? do you think he will be happy? i would just keep that information to yourself for now....he could find any little reason to fire you and where would you be then? if your job pays good and you have full benefits, why would you want to leave? do you do this when you have a partner, keep looking for something better? if you spend your whole life looking for something better you might miss out on some really good things that are right in front of you!!!!

As long as you keeping doing well the job that you are being paid for, I don't see the point. He will only think that you are not motivated anymore an may find a replacement for you before you even find another job.
Now, if you happen to find another job that you qualify for, I would play it clean and let him then know that you'll soon leave, giving him time to replace you.
Just keep working to the highest possible standards but keep your eyes and ears open for a better opportunity.

I hope it helps.

A boss.

I personally NEVER let on to my boss that I looking for another job until I have a written job offer in my hands, my friend on the other hand does tell her bosses when she is in the market (she says it gives them a chance to offer her a better salary, benefits, etc.), but my thinking is that today's job market is too tight and you run the risk of putting yourself out of a job before you have landed a suitable replacement.

Just my opinion.

NO!!!

Most employers have a clause in the paperwork you originally signed that states that they are allowed to fire you for looking for another job.

This is very reasonable because if you are looking for a new job it means that you are not as focused on your current job as you should be, and you are certainly not loyal to your current company!!

Put it this way. If you were dating someone but were sorta looking around for someone else to date, would it be a good idea to tell the girl you are currently dating that you are looking to replace her? How would you expect her to react? Your current employer is going to feel the same way.

Wait until you get the other job before you tell your current employer, then provide 2 weeks notice before you leave (which your new employer should certainly allow, as they would want the same respect once you leave them!!)

Absolutley not! My sister just did this very thing about a month ago and they brought her into the office and told her that since she wasn't happy at her job, they were going to go ahead and let her go. She was forced to leave before she found a job because she told the boss she was just looking. Don't Do It. The boss only cares about one thing and that is the job you are doing, not you.

Yes cause some employers as soon as you say you are looking then there is tension at work and sometimes you can be dismissed just out of spite. The rule of thumb that I have found is just tell the new employer to give you 2 weeks notice of your start date just so you can then give your current employer 2 weeks notice, and also it leaves you a chance to go back if things do not work out.

no way thats the last thing you want to do your boss will treat you different if they think your going to leave. keep your eyes open look for another job go 4 interviews when you get a new job tell your boss, and that you will stay if they do what you ask. (more money for example)

Some people still hold on to the loyalty of others.... if you tell him that your looking, he would probably feel bad and betrayed, and depending on the type of person he is, might even make your stay there uncomfortable. Just keep looking and tell him when you've found a better job. But then again.... honesty is the best policy.
