I have family there and HATE their accents. I'm a midwesterner, and love a southern accent, but long island speak is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I don't think it is ugly just different. I have a good friend from there. She is a nice person but very hard to understand sometimes. The other day she asked me if I wanted a cup of coffee and I was like do I want what. She had to repeat it a couple of times till I got it. I am happy it was noisy where we were so she thought I just didn't hear what she said, not that I didn't understand her.
Every part of the country has a different accent. Well every were around the world. I live in Egypt right now and you can tell were someone is from here by their accent.
I would not call any accent ugly though. I used to live in the south and had a very noticeable southern accent. I moved away and was made fun of alot so I worked hard to loose most of it. It is still noticeable sometimes though and some people pick on me about it and it can really hurt my feelings sometimes. A person can't help they have an accent.

LOL, what an awesome Question I'm from the Bronx and I can always tell when I'm speaking with a Long Islander or someone from S.I. One of the accents that really bothers me is "J.A.P" accent. Whiney girls who think daddy will by them anything and everything they want.
As for myself, I don't sound like I'm from NYC at all.
Kinda strange.

Well being Long Island born and raised i was surprised to see that our accent is so widely hated, and known. All well, most of us do not care what you Texan hillbillies think anyhow. We are VERY proud to be Long Islanders. We have the best of so many different worlds between the City, the beaches, the vineyards, the Hampton's, ect.....ect.....

I welcome the 'strange' accents of New Yorkers.
It's better than the drawl of many of the Southerners in Alabama!
I work with quite a few women who sound like Jenny (as a child) in Forrest Gump!
One of my co-workers (in particular) is a Southern drawling, cloying, put-on.
I sometimes wish I could aim a TV remote at her mouth and put it on mute!

I do not think they have as you say "ugly accents" but due to the fact of where their where raise. Of course you expect someone to adapt to their nature surroundings.

Can a sound be ugly? I thought ugly referred only to something visual.
