In Ray Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains,” the main character of the piece is the house itself. It is personified and assumed to be living because it is in fact, controlling everything that is going on within the house. There are no people that are controlling the cleaning and the cooking and the talking. To have the house as the main character of the piece affects the agenda of the poem because it is not talking about human beings acting in this way, it is talking about a house. The way the story is written, makes it seem as though the house is acting in a mechanical way, with the robot mice cleaning up any mess that springs up. In reality, many people also act this way, they clean up any mess the minute it is created. It seems silly when written this way, but the chore is actually the same as everyday human life. Also, it seems as though the piece is trying to voice that too much technology will lead to downfall, as the house burns up in flames in the end. Even with all the technology it had, it was not able to save itself. This may be alluding to the idea that we as human life will end up doing the same to ourselves with the progression of technology.

Did you get hurt patting yourself on the back for that one? I mean it's not exactly rocket science, is it Jethro? LOL Yeah I would have done the same thing myself, except I would have glanced through the instructions just to see if there was anything special in there that might have a smidgen of interest for me, otherwise I would just pop open a beer and let the wife do it because that is a man's job. That could, of course, explain why I am divorced now.

I've not only read it (Ray Bradbury), I've taught it.
Yup, it's the house since a nuclear war has pretty much wiped out mankind

I agree with the fellow teacher above me... and I have taught this short story by Bradbury often as well.
The house is the main character.
