The real question is "where to start"?
The shared documents folder is actually a "local folder" that does not necessarily reside on a network location. Unless you have redirected your "my documents" to a network share, you would be pleasantly surprised to find that the share itself is actually c:\documents & settings\all users\documents
Unfortunately, you've not said what the physical location is of this share, so I'd have to ask the question: is there another PC involved and what network is setup? Is your environment home or work? You have not necessarily lost access to the network, but most likely someone (or some event) has removed your permission to the share.
If you are not an administrator, there would not be terribly much you could do especially so in a work environment. You would have to speak to your systems admin about fixing this.
If you are in a home environment, it could be someone playing tricks on you...
First, verify that you are an administrator on your machine - create a folder in the directory c:\windows, or install a small program - success to this usually means yes and if yes is the answer, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 (this is the method to take ownership of a directory/file) The article on disabling "simple file sharing" could be quite relevant to you, if you have never changed any "views" in XP. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874/ (disabling simple file sharing via this link - also part of the first link)
Once you have taken ownership, you should be able to see what you're after. Please do not do this in a work environment - it will bring much trouble to your doorstep in the office.
Keep in mind that applying permissions using XP security is quite different to just "sharing", so be careful what you do. As long as you are an admin, and remain an admin you should be ok.

There is a lot you need to check. I will write just some things to keep in mind.

1) Check to make sure your computer is connected to the network.

2) Check to see that you are logged into the correct account to have access to the reasources.

3) Check to see if the remote server or computer storing the files / folders is operational.
