No, it's not true. I work in retail and our Black Friday ads are still for the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday is in November, the day after Thanksgiving Day that marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas shopping season. The majority of significant retailers have massive advertising sales to kick off the holiday shopping period.

Black Friday has ended up being that popular in standard bricks and mortar establishments that people line up for hours and there is great deals of push and shoving and even physical violence. Why would you wait in a long line, be pressed and pushed just to save a couple of profits when online sites like Amazon have massive Black Friday sales and it's a tension free environment.

Black Friday will always be the Friday after Thanksgiving. Perhaps if you saw any stores advertising for this weekend, they were advertising pre-season sales.
