There have been twelve in total. Eight won the award while playing in the National League, although Jackie Robinson had to beat out competition in both leagues. Four winners have come from the AL:

1947 Jackie Robinson (combined)
1951 Willie Mays (NL)
1956 Luis Aparicio (AL)
1956 Frank Robinson (NL)
1958 Orlando Cepada (NL)
1959 Willie McCovey (NL)
1961 Billy Williams (NL)
1967 Rod Carew (AL)
1967 Tom Seaver (NL)
1968 Johnny Bench (NL)
1972 Carlton Fisk (AL)
1977 Eddie Murray (AL)

This number will increase very soon, since the 1982 AL winner, Cal Ripken Jr., is up for induction next year.
