Those with good credit are generally more responsible individuals than those with bad credit, thus a company can get a good snapshot of how responsible you are overall by checking your credit rating.

However, this is but one of many factors companies take into account when reviewing a candidate. If they think it is a problem, then they are going to ask you about it during your interview. If you can truthfully say that you made some financial mistakes when you were younger and that you now have it under control and are working your way out of debt, then they are likely going to erase that as a concern.

However, if you are still late on bills, still borrowing more and more money or putting more and more on credit cards, then you are financially irresponsible and they are going to think they can find someone more responsible to fill their position!!

I recently moved states, and the state that I am in now (virginia) seems to have credit checks being run more so then the state that I moved from (PA). I read in TIME magazine that credit checks for employment is becoming more and more common. They said that this is for companies to decipher who 'loyal' employers will be. I work at a bank and they did a backgroun check on me (obviously, it's a financial insitution). I do not have the greatest credit..but I got the job. I got a second job at a retail store and they also did a background check. I guess it's a good way to get America focusing more on their credit...but it stinks for us who HAVE debt and need to get a job and cant for fear of credit checks.

It seems to be the new trend in employment.I asked my boss once and he told me because bad credit reflects on your character-like someone who doesn't pay their bills is less respectful of their responsibilities and have characteristics of people who steal.Personally I think that's a load of bull.In the meantime,I think the only thing you can do is to slowly improve your credit in case the chance comes up again.

They use it as a gauge of how responsible you might be. If you're upfront about it, and you show them it's just medical bills or that it only happened during a certain period of time and there's a plan for paying it off, they may lighten up on you.
