That's an interesting question. To answer it, you should really know the roots of the problem. "white" people are not ALL responsible. Spain traded guns and silk to Africa in exchange for human lives. The humans who were exchanged were either war captives or criminals and were already slaves in Africa! Now we have more than one group of people responsible for slavery. Does anyone look at Africa and say "How could trade human lives for a gun and a silk suit?"
Now, you said white people, right? I am white, and my family was not even here when slavery existed. Funny enough, my husband is part black and part white. His white ancestors owned slaves and his black ancestors were slaves. So who would pay the repirations? Would he pay them to himself?
It would not be possible to track down every slave owner through his/her ancestors and it wouldn't be fair to make people who have nothing to do with it pay for it.
Lastly, has anyone alive today ever owned a slave or been a slave? I didn't think so.
Today, looking back, we can tell slavery was not a good idea. But during the time frame it took place, it was not frowned upon. A LOT of countries have owned slaves (yes, even africa!!) and paying repirations is not going to help. The best thing we can do for humanity is to not make the same mistake twice.

I don't see the point in holding todays whites accountable for the mistakes of whites in the past. I had nothing to do with slavery, and you want me to pay you reparations? Nope, 'fraid not friend. I didn't do anything wrong to you, oh, and by the way, you weren't a slave, so why should we pay you? Your ancestors are the ones that suffered through it, not you. Get a job, and quit trying to leech off of other people or the government.

Actually 250,000 union soldiers died b/c Lincoln didn't want the south to split from America. He really didn't feel that strongly about slavery.

just a thought...by the way, I agree with you

People, people, people don't you know that it's 2006? Why can't we stop the black and white thing? Will it always be this away? I pray not. No, whites of today don't owe me not one red penny. what happen to my people could never be paid for never! But to think that "whites" of today are still thinking that we should go back to Africa, stop being cry babies, I just don't know what to say. I'm glad that there are only a few of you out there and for you I will pray. God bless you.
From a Black you only owe respect.

Even if whites did owe blacks of the past how could they pay them they are all dead, I dont see any slaves today. And not all white people owned slaves. And this question has been asked several times.

What is owed is to the people of that day...not to the people of 2006. We all owe one another respect, compassion, honesty, and understanding. We owe our children good educations that does not make differences between race or sex. We owe the future of our country to accept that the background we come from be it African or European or Asian is no better or worse than any other. WE OWE THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEIR LIVES AT RISK EVERYDAY. Firemen, police, military.... That is why we fly the flag, vote in elections, sing the National Anthem say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I feel that no one owes anything. The history of our country has strief all threw it,all our ancestors were wronged at one time or another. In the end it made us all just one thing---The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.I wouldn't want to live any where else.(Oh yeah---both sides lost men in that war)

I'm sick of this question. This question has been posted time and time again. I'm black and don't know of any other blacks crying or nagging about reperations. You people need to get over yourselves. This is not a topic of conversation among my family and friends. Questions like this are only posted to get racist answers. Who cares about reperations? I don't.
