The noise is caused by the friction of the rubber against the glass, therefore when there is more water for lubrication, there is less friction and therefore less noise.
On the issue of newer cars not making the noise even with little or no water, that has to do with the fact that their windshield glass is new and smooth. With the smooth glass, the small amount of water is spread evenly across the glass, providing even lubrication. With an older windshield, there are scratches and knicks in the glass, giving the water a place to go and therefore not providing as much lubrication. When there is enough water (heavy rain, etc), the lubrication is there, and the noise stops.
The best chance of stopping this is to get a new windshield. However, as that is likely not a viable option, you can try the same method that one would use to remove scratches and smooth out their paint job...polish and wax.
Also, check to make sure that the arms that move your wipers aren't bent in any way, causing them to be misaligned. Good luck.

Try triple edge wipers. They've never made noise for me or any car I've installed them on. They're a little More expensive than say An-co wipers but they have a lifetime warranty with them as well. They are silicone impregnated and that makes the water run off the windshield like rain X And helps keep them from chattering

try to change them with a high quality set and use the orange windshield wiper fluid it lubriucates better and the rain just beads off, its the only kind I use Its called Rain-x...I was reading about the additive vs the gallon of orange fluid and people do not like the additive they say it leaves a hazy film on the windsheild and the washer fluid doesnt...just wait until the cheapo blue stuff runs out ( or you can syphon it) and fill all the way up with the good orange stuff dont mix with blue or the "beading" wont happen

they get dried out. take a alcohol pad and clean the rubber part of the wipers to get all dirt off of them. i did that several times until i got the chance to get new ones. you also could have something on the windshield. when i worked at a detail shop we took double ott steel wool and cleaned the windshield. just wet the windshield down and go over it with double ott steel wool lightly, you won,t scratch the glass if you do it lightly

cause your are using your wipers too much. if its just drizzling then you dont need to turn them on full speed. try rain-x !! best stuff. as long as the car is moving the rain just beads off the windshield.

Try using some rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and cleaning the wipers with that.
