I think that either the Venetian or Paris is a lovely hotel to stay in if you want somewhere nice without it being way too expensive. Both hotels are among the more recently built hotels in Vegas, and they have some great ambience that is actually quite romantic. The Venetian has these adorable little gondolas that sail around the exterior of the hotel. A lot of couples find them to be romantic. It costs $45 for a ride, but they are powered by real Venice gondoliers who wear striped shirts and sing and everything. Also, Paris has the small Eiffel Tower replica that you can actually climb to the top. That is very sweet. For shows, I hear that the new Cirque Du Soleil "Love" show, featuring Beatles songs, is just amazing, and I also love the Blue Man Group. For gambling, though, I really suggest you hit the Imperial Palace. It's one of the oldest hotels on the strip, and their rooms aren't super great for staying in, but I was so lucky there with blackjack (they're one of the few casinos that still offer single-deck blackjack) and also they have one blackjack area where all the dealers dress up like famous celebrities (Madonna, Rod Stewart, etc.) and stay in character while dealing, so it's great fun! I hope you have a great time. Wish I could go too...

My wife and I have stayed at Paris, LV Hilton, and Aladdin. Paris was our favorite, but a little pricey. It is right across from the Bellagio, and we had a front row seat to the famous fountains every hour. The Hilton was nice, but it's a couple blocks off the strip and not right in the middle of the action. It does have a monorail stop though, so you can ride the train up and down. The Aladdin was a good compromise. It's right in the central part of the strip, next to Paris and easy walk to the Bellagio and Caesars Palace. It was a good bit less expensive than Paris too, and the room was still very nice.
As far as shows, neither of us are in to the normal "Vegas Show" stuff, so we went to Cirque Du Soliel's Mystere at Treasure Island. It was great. As for food, our favorite place is a Chinese restaurant in (I can't remember the name, but it was inside Barbary Coast casino sort of across the strip from Caesars Palace.
For shopping, the forum at Caesars is the only place to go.
Believe it or not, neither of us gamble, and probably put a total of $5 or less in a slot machine each time we go, just to say we did. We just like the city.

Actually there aren't many dirty cheap hotels/motels within the city limits of Las Vegas, so as for the typical tourist I recommend the Holiday Inn on the Strip, or the Westward Ho, also on the Strip, and if you want to save even more money then any of the 4 corners Hotels downtown are good choices. Have fun, and Good Luck:)

Right after Thanksgiving? If its right after, you are in luck. Its a slow time, but starting Nov 30, we have NFR (Rodeo) and the town fills up with cowboys and buckle bunnies. Room rates go thru the roof.
Define your price range? whats cheap?
The Tropicana is on the strip and usually under $80. The Wynn is cheap and usually under $500 - To some that is cheap.

Treasure Island is a nice place to stay and generally reasonably priced. You might also try Bally's, New York New York, and Luxor on the strip. If you don't mind being downtown, Golden Nugget is nice, and there is always Rio and The Orleans.
Celine Dion is a wonderful show, and so is LeReve, Mystere and KA.
Have a great time!

When i stayed in Sahara Hotel, well it is old but it was OK. $25.00 per day but that was in 2003.
buffet menu was excellent. I am a vegetarian and i was worried about not having a choice of veg menu. But i was surprised with their menu on buffet.
If yo want a relatively new hotel and close to the other hotels on strip I suggest either venetian or paris paris.
Caesar palace, mGM and others are a bit expensive.

considering im from los angeles i go there a lot. i went last week for a business trip and stayed at Tuscany Suites and Casino which was really cheap compared to the other hotels. I wouldnt reccomend it if you are under 30 though. Im going back in Dec. with my girlfriend and we are staying at the Wynn. Ive heard this place is amazing. as far as shows you must go see "O" Cirque du soliel.

If you're planning on going next week.... Good luck getting a room.... Some places have them, but try to reserve before you go.
I like Treasure Island, Luxor, NYNY, and the Hard Rock Hotel. Try www.vegas.com to get a good deal - that's how I got the best deal the last time I went.

I stayed at the MGM grand hotel but I would just look around online for your price range. There is a place where you can buy tickets at noon each day for cheaper than the regular price, up to half off in some cases. Look for the big coca cola bottle near the MGM grand hotel for the ticket booth. If you buy tickets at your hotel, they are REALLY expensive!
You can also spend a couple of hours a day sitting through time share presentations. I know its boring, but you can get a free evening of fairly decent entertainment for free! You usually put down a $20 deposit for the time share, and it takes a couple of hours to sit through - then they hassle you to buy, but you do get free goods!
