Did you check the automatic transmission fluid ? If not you must fill it to top.

Or your transmission is bad as stated in the prevoius answer.

I'm assuming it's an automatic.

There could be a number of things wrong, all leading up to a transmission rebuild. The clutch packs are probably worn, the bands are probably worn, the transmission has most likely not been well maintained. You can try a fluid flush and replace the filter to see if it will help delay the inevitable.

Key word is "given". The car has a transmission problem and to fix it may exceed the value of the car.
