Most reptiles lay eggs on land. They lay the eggs in loose dirt or sand and leave them to hatch on their own. Some snakes and lizards give birth to their young, like mammals do.
The eggs have a tough shell that is either hard or leathery, which helps protect the young reptile inside since the mother nor father stay with the eggs.
When the young reptile hatches, it looks just like its parents. It has to dig out of the dirt by itself and survive without the help of its mother or father. The crocodile and alligator parents are an exception. They sometimes stay with the eggs and/or tend to their young.

They reproduce sexually. Most reptiles lay eggs, though some species of constrictor snakes have live births. In most cases, the gender of the offspring is determined at conception. In other cases (notably crocodilians and turtles) gender is determined by the temperature at which the eggs incubate.
