After visiting relatives in brighton, I was shocked to see a house-front covered in flashing Christmas lights.
When informing work mates about this I was told that in fact they had been up for over a week.

Dont get me wrong - I myself love Christmas, and all the 'Trimmings' that go with it (as do most of the non-Christian people where I work)

I was just wondering what everyone else thought on this matter.

So my question is ---

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE ARE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS UP ALREADY ???

ok i understand the need to put them up before the bad weather starts - but to have them flashing away now seems a bit silly to me.

thanks everyone for answering this - i will try and chose best answer soon.

When you put up the decoration early, it minimises the impact, and the magic of the decorations. One friend of mine puts up no decorations at all, until they bring in the tree on Christmas Eve. Then everybody decorates it in preparation for Christmas morning. It marks the occasion as being very special - for Christians, and for others who may simply need a break from the doldrums of winter.

On the other hand, there are many people who really love decorating their houses, and Christmas is the best time for it. They get a lot of satisfaction from having them up for a long time.

I like to decorate about two weeks before Christmas. But I can't really find anything wrong with other people decorating.

But don't get me started on the retail version of all this.

If you are celebrating a religious festival, then why not consider the religious calender that specifies the date of Christmas?

The twelve days of Christmas are when to celebrate Christ's birth, so that should give you a date as to when to take them down at least. When I was a kid we always used to put them up on Christmas eve, but that seems a bit tight in the current climate.

Advent is the period that runs up to Christmas, so I would suggest the earliest you should put them up is the beginning of Advent which considering Advent calenders is on the 1st December.

However, Christianity is all about GRACE and LOVE and JOY and not being a slave to a set of rules like ALL other religions and philosophies. Bottom line is that according to Christianity, you are FREE to put them up and take they down when you feel like it, and not be dictated to by those who would make you a slave to a set of rules. You are under GRACE NOT UNDER LAW!!!!

I have actually left some of my Christmas decorations up in the front room all year for several years to celebrate Christ!!! Party on! Christ is with us all year!!! What an excuse for a party every day of the year!!!!!

Traditionally the Christmas decorations are not put up before the fourth Sunday before Christmas or the last weekend in November, adding to them each week right up to Christmas, just like in Church.
I think it is a horrendous waste of electricity as are outside decorations, which incidentally aren't put up for the household to enjoy but to tell the neighbours how flash they are.
Yes, I too love Christmas it is a truly magical time of year.

I put up Christmas decorations early last year (about this time) because I was having spinal surgery on the 21st & wouldn't be able to after Thanksgiving when I usually put them up. I will be putting them up early again this year because it takes me a while to get everything out with my back the way it is. Besides, lights are beautiful to look at.

I think now is the perfect time. Do it before the weather starts getting colder. You can also put them up and just not turn them on until the end of November or beginning of December. Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

I don't think people should put their Christmas lights up early. I love them and I love the tradition but because there is so much electricity being used during the season, i think producing carbon should be kept as low as possible.

it's really idiotic to put up decorations too early. in my town the decorations started going up at the begining of october. it's insane.

anyway, the best time to put themup is twelve days before, as in the song, and take them down twelvedays after christmas.

I love Christmas too, with all the trimmings, but it is way to early and it takes all the fun out of it for the younger members of our society, who find it hard to wait so long for the big day... MERRY XMAS BY THE WAY
