Ok, these cards REALLY bug me!!! First of all, why do I have to carry a card just to get their sale prices? Let's not even discuss the fact that Kroger sales are rarely even sales.....like Kroger bacon 2 for $7! WHY would I want to pay more than $3.50 for Kroger's bacon anyways? Anyways, having to give them my card every time just to get a "sale" price is just pure annoying! I've boycotted Kroger for years, but now I moved to the big city and traffic is so annoying and it's the closest store!! GRRRRR

I feel your pain-but no card higher price. The good news is you can use a fictional name and number if you wish when you sign up that way they have a spending record but no matching party. Most stores will let you just use the phone number and not carry the card. Stores use them to make purchasing decisions as well as set pricing. If you think 2/$7 is a value and purchase they will use that matrix again if not and instead you purchase the name brand at closer to 2 of $6.25 they adjust their pricing accordingly. It also helps them stock for holidays and create those convenient "most needed" displays for shopping ease. Yes I agree they are annoying but they do save you an average of 8% and with coupons I have saved as much as 32%. Most non-chain stores will not take coupons because they are too much work chains are incented to take them which is why they will even have double and sometimes triple coupon days. Believe it or not those cards reduce food waste as well because they are a more accurate gage of purchase than end of day weights and inventory counts. Some of the larger restaurants are considering them and food service here in California that are located inside of grocery stores often have secret sales if you use your card at the point of purchase.

As annoying as they are, they seem to have become a necessary evil. Paying their "sale" price is a whole lot better than paying their "non member" price. I don't know how other stores work but with Kroger you actually don't need to have your card. Instead you can punch in your ID number on the credit card swipe pad. It does the same thing. The number is your phone # including area code. Any cashier should be able to walk you through the process. Happy shopping!

I've kept mine because mine is coded for an employee discount.

If it annoys you so much, why shop there? Go somewhere else. I don't see anybody with a gun to your head forcing you to shop there.
