Fiction or Fantasy...Romance is okay is not formula romance. A good book has well developed characters who are flawed, we can in some way identify with them and we care about them.
Scenery or background is not so important to me unless its a story based on a historical event. Small details are important to me (example, during the time I knew him I never saw Dan without a blue bandana tucked away in his faded shirt pockets).
Most vital to me is that the story is somehow different from others, it stands out. And I do not want to be able to guess the ending by the time I reach page 3.

Basically all fantasy has a romantic aspect to it. I like fantasy for the way the authors' tend to make their characters more real. Same goes for mysteries, adventure, thrillers and westerns. Try reading TEMPLE by Matthew Reilly and you will see what I mean. Or AMAZONIA by James Rollins. If you really like fantasy try the duology by Dennis McKiernan called INTO THE FORGE and INTO THE FIRE, or his IRON TOWER trilogy. All of these books are great reads. If you like good sci-fi that really moves along try reading the 'Honor Harrington' series by David Weber. If you like a kind of erotic military fiction try reading these books by John Ringo in this order: GHOST, KILDAR, CHOOSERS OF THE SLAIN, all really good reads too. Happy reading.

I read fantasy mostly, though I like humor too. (Suggestions: Artemis Fowl, Eragon/Eldest, Gordon Korman, Javakosh by Jeanette Mirll.) A unique character makes a story. The scenery, I don't care a lot about. It's nice to know where the characters are, but it's more important to know WHO they are.

Yes, yes and no. I like the stories in fiction and fantasy. I'm not a romance novel type person, I don't care for literotica, or silly "I hate and love you at the same time" type of stuff. I'm open to pretty much everything else.

i read any type of books more so fiction and fantasy, well what i think makes a book good is if the author is able to capture the readers so that they cant but the book down.

As long as the book maintains a certain level of the language (I read both english & french), gives enought details, and teaches you about something...it is a good book. I read a lot of african American fiction. I find in those a lot of things that are relevant to MY everyday life.

love all 3 genres, and more. what makes a book really good is lovable characters, and humor. always. also, a dramatic plot twist. but that's just my opinion.
