It usually depends on the Socket format of your chip. If the format is the same, then you can. However, if your old chip is Pentium 3 and the new one is a newer generation (Pentium 4), chances are you will NOT be able to do it.

No, because Pentium 3 CPU's use a specific slot called PGA370. (Sometimes they use a type called Slot 1)

Unfortunatly Pentium 4's use a socket called Socket 478. They are completely incompatible. Even if you were to solder the right socket on, it would be like trying to put a truck engine in a Mini... it is not designed for such a big power plant.

If you want a Pentium 4 CPU, you will need to buy a Pentium 4 CPU, a Socket 478 Motherboard and some DDR memory. (Only late model P3s use DDR memory.)

So to answer your question in short, no, you can't replace a P3 with a P4.

No, you can't the socket is different, you'll need to buy a motherboard with pentium 4 socket compatible.

Probably not...I am not aware of any P4 that is compatible with a P3 socket.
