He is a citizen of a republic and could not accept a titular honour. However he has already received an honorary Order of Merit from the Queen, which in my opinion is much better. There are over 1000 knights, some of doubtful worth, but only 24 holders of the OM. It is the highest of the honours which do not come with a title, and the overall quality of its membership is higher than that of the orders of knighthood. All of its holders are very distinguished.

Your question is unclear. Are you for or against Nelson Mandela being recommended for knighthood? As knights have to be British (UK), Mandela, as a South African, would not be eligible, but no one would dispute that he has been one of the most outstanding of African leaders.

nelson mandela should get a knighthood title,do you know that he spent 27 years on robbin island jail, that when i grew up in aparteid south africa, how the blacks were treated?it was a police state ,we were not allowed to mix with ,blacks, indians ,coloured and chinese people.it was a segregated country, thats why i left in 79 ,27 years ago.i have soo much respect for mr. mandela.and if i could turn the clock back.i would always have the secret friends, whom i was not allowed to see because of their race.i say to all of you out there and all my family back in cape town.(amandela)give peace a chance, from mikhal in israel.
