Think about what your professor or teacher seems to want. Then decide on an approach to take with the topic. Don't believe that longer and more elaborate is necessarily better - be succinct, to the point, and make every word and sentence count and add something to the essay.

A narrowly focused essay with specific examples to support your assertions is always the better of the two. Good luck.

Narrow topic that can be applied broadly.

An example might be over prescribing prescription drugs. In your conclusion, you could elaborate that this is an important topic, especially in the context of a larger issue that plagues our nation, drug abuse and drug addiction on the whole. People might think "drug abuse" - cocain and heroin addicts. But really, someone can be addicted to xanax and then their psychitrist becomes the dealer.

That's just an example. I always got the highest grades with a very narrow focus and how when you look at it, it fits into a universal topic as well.

I hope this will help. My professors usualy pay alot of attention to ellaboration on topics. So if you have a norrow focus with the right amount of sources and the right names of sources in the mix then you are pretty much on the safe side... so dont forget to list your sources.

you can't get a bunch of details in a broad paper. narrow it down.

If you can narrow your subject into different aspects then your essay can talk a little about each aspect.
