I noticed that when Bruce Wayne appears as Batman in "Batman Begins", his voice becomes much more menacing and gravely. Was this the vocal efforts of Christian Bale, or was something used to change his voice?

It was more than likely just Christian's efforts. Christian Bale is renowned for keeping in character when he's filming a role and will select a 'voice' which suits the character and keep in it. That is why, if you ever see interviews with him whilst on the set of a movie, he always speaks in the voice of the character he's filming. He is a supreme talent in the world of acting and has been all his life imo. He really outshone the big name stars in his first major role in Empire Of The Sun.

I believe he did this himself and not the effects of anything else, but I can't prove this in any fashion. It just seems Bale did this on his own when he was Batman, and I liked the effect. I had never seen any of Bale's movies before his role as Batman, and I am now a fan. He did a great job as Batman in Batman Begins.

I think he did because once he put on the suit, his voice deepened quite a bit. I do remember reading an article around the time when BBs came out and that he said he did deepen the voice because he thought that batman would have it for some reason

Great answer above, but they also mixed some extra bass into his voice to give it more depth and timbre. If you have a decent bass speaker and listen closely, you can hear an extra rumbling in the background whenever he speaks as Batman.

That was all him trying to sound menacing like Alec baldwin in the Shadow. It is a mind trick you pull on your enemies to make them fear you.
