In Anglo-Saxon countries, Santa Claus is said to leave a lump of coal instead of Christmas presents in the stockings of naughty children.
Unless you've been naughty, you've nothing to worry about, but if you get an aluminum foil wrapped, irregularly shaped and fairly small stocking stuffer... you should probably try to behave better next year!

Back when coal was used for heat, receiving coal was actually a gift. Especially for those that couldn't afford much. A lump of coal could generate enough heat to to be warm or heat a pot of soup.

It was believed, the coal represented the person and their actions throught the year. If you behaved badly, you didnt' deserve anything, but the coal. You are what you do.
