Which one would i need to change the one by the cadillac converter or the one by the exhaust. Also could my temp. coolant sensor be bad. If my car is running smoothly then once it reaches the half mark on the temp. guage , my car starts to putt.

I would change both. If one went bad the other is probabbly about to.

Check the location of both sensors to see if the following information apply to your car.

Two sensors, same exahust path
1st The O2 sensor closer to the engine before the catalitic converter is the one most important and plays a bigger part on the A/F mixutre calculation than the other O2 sensor.

2nd The O2 sensor after the catalitic converter is just to monitor the quality of your catalitic converter.

Two Sensors - each one in one side of the engine
If it is a V6 or V8 engine chances are both O2 sensors are players on the A/F mixture calculation. In some V6 or V8 each exahust manifold has it's own O2 sensor. In this case you need both.

Check the location of both sensors to see if the following information apply to your car.

If in a tight budget replace the one before the catalitic converter closer to the engine exhaust because it plays a role on the A/F calculation.


Also if your engine is bad when warm then I would check the EGR valve, it could be sticking partially open. When cold the computer compensates by adding more fuel and the system runs rich (more fuel than needed) , but if the EGR is partially open the mixture would be almost fine.

When the engine warms the computer will reduce the fuel to a calculated value (in ideal case) and the engine will run fine. If the EGR is partially open this will add extra air that will trash the computer's mixture, giving more air than needed making your system runs lean (more air than fuel) and feeling loss of power and shaking.

But also could be your catalitic converter being plugged ... ( if it starts ti putt )

A trained mechanic with a compression tester, an digital voltemeter and a vaccumm gauge reader hooked on your car can tell you the truth about your catalitic converter. A plugged exhaust pipe reads easily on the vaccum metter.

Just replace both O2 sensors. They're past their lifespan. A bad coolant temp sensor wouldn't make your car putt. Don't worry about that till you replace the O2 sensors. They could be causing the engine to run way too lean when it warms up.

Your catalytic converter and exhaust O2 sensors should both be replaced unless you get a diastolics test to verify which one of them is bad. If you have your temp gauge going to the half-way point or higher, you might need your coolant replaced or refilled, or even worse get you might need to flush the whole engine and remove sludge. Get all that taken care of before you spend anothe $5,000 on another engine.

Don't take anybodies advise that tells you to go to auto zone. Auto zone has a code reader not a computer diagnostic scanner. 90% of the time there code scanner gives you a code that is not the actual problem with the vehicle causing that code. The people pulling that code are parts salespeople with no diagnostic skills. The cheap Taiwan parts they sell will not work properly with your computer system anyway. Take your vehicle to a reliable auto technician and have it properly diagnosed and repaired before you waste a ton of money on bad advise.

if it starts running poor after warming up it might not be your sensors at all,you might have a plugged or partially plugged cat converter. best to put it on a computer to get the codes,but a cat convert won't show on a code,but could give you a false reading on your cat sensor.

it depends on which one is bad. you can change both, and not worry anymore about it. the temp guage is the water temperature in the radiator. if its getting hot, change the thermostat. you may also do a flush and replace old hoses at the same time.

Have you been to an autozone? They will put the car on a computer and tell you what the code is and then you can look it up and find out what is wrong.

i own a repairs shop,and it cant take a guess at which one it would be ,but if you,ll remove them and look at the tips on them,this might give you some indication of which one might be bad,especially if you see one of them with the tip about burned off of it ,on this one its sort of a guessing game,if your unsure replace both of them,they probably need to be replaced anyway,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Usually the one before the cat converter. Replace the both..........they are cheap to replace if you do it yourself/
