Can a best-fit line of a scatter plot go horisontal or vertical? or only diagnal? thank you.

Only diagonal because it must show progression of both axes. If it were horiz it would be the best fit line for only one pt on the y axis. If it were vert if would be the best fit line for only one pt on the x axis

It can be all of them. Maybe the scatter graph goes in a vertical or horizontal lines so in the end you just join them up, but they are mainly diagonal because best fit lines normally are only used in a case of different results (change in both x and y), a straight line could also just be a normal line graph. But its possible to have a vertical or horizontal line, but it is very unlikely.

In theory it could be any of them, though vertical is extremely unlikely.

A horizontal regression line would either mean there is basically no reliationship between the two variables or that the second variable stays constant.

A vertical regression line would either mean there is no relationship between the two variables or that the first variable stays constant.

While any of these can in theory happen, the only regression lines we normally care about are those with non-zero slope (diagonal lines).
