Surely by commiting acts worthy of a custodial sentence these people are forfeiting their rights to a certain extent. In today's society, with over crowded prisons and increasingly relaxed sentences you have to do something pretty drastic to be locked up. We've become so hung up on human rights in this country that often prisoners have more rights than their victims. This is completely wrong and makes its difficult to feel any sympathy for these people. I'm not disputing the fact that drug abuse is an illness that requires specialist treatment but compensating criminals with money from the tax payer is a beyond a joke, especially as in a society where my employer (the NHS) can owe me over £2000 in back pay but claims it does not have the funds to do so. This government has got it all wrong, they reward the wrong people and throw money at high profile problems whilst taking from places where it might actually do some good for law abiding, hard working people.

Are they winning these law suits? If they are, what are we supposed to do? Keep giving them heroin in prison so they don't have to go through withdraws? Aren't they in there for breaking the law in the first place or am I crazy?
Why do prisoners get better treatment than the single mom who is working two jobs to raise her children?

I found it telling that these criminals (probably getting legal aid) are using the justice system to claim THEIR human rights were violated..for the justice system not allowing them to carry on taking an illegal substance in jail!?
Hello!? Where is personal responsibility in all this - compensation for being addicted to a substance that is already illegal!? Or the recognition that had they not commited a crime they would never of had to go cold turkey in the first place!?
So what is to happen now? Drug addicts who end up in jail are to be allowed to continue to be junkies - getting a hit at the taxpayers expense only to come out and commit further crimes to fund this habit again!?
Aye aye aye - just is crazy as you say..
Where is the law used to complain/campaign/seek compensation regarding the VICTIM'S right to be protected from the crime these men commited!?
Recently read Moll Flanders (set in 17th century) in those times the prison talked about Newgate is a dire place and one all criminals tried to avoid going to. Furthermore, old offenders (those who commited more than one crime/were heard of) were sentenced to hang for crimes such as theft.. beggars belief how lenient our society is by comparison.

They have all been infected with the PC pandemic. Yes, it goes without saying, the lunatics are running the asylum. There are three elements to this madness. The EU with its Human Rights Act, Our government which signed up to it, and the courts. Not a peep out of the government following this judgement.

I saw this story waiting for a train and thought - these people have broken the laws of our land and are being punished for it - but they now get a payout as they cannot get their fix in prison - and in prison at least they have a roof over their heads meals etc etc
makes you wonder what the point of being a law abideing citizen in this country today

Actually, the dangers of going "cold turkey" from heroin addiction are serious. But still, they chose to take the drug, so why should we pay for them when incarcerated for a crime?
Tough call, isn't it?
