In the interest of social harmony, should we only allow immagraints to live and work in the UK and not allow them to buy our houses from the council only for them to sell on at a later date and take the money with them ... i only ask this as as a foreigner you cant buy property if your not from that country ..

No we shouldnt allow them to buy our houses. Over the years I believe this is what has contributed to many being priced out of the housing market and it seems a large proportion of foreigners are making money by buying to rent - doing up properties on the cheap and renting out at inflated cost in lots of cases to people living on benefits. If you look at the cases which have been brought to court of landlords fiddling the system by claiming benefit for people not even living there it seems a huge percentage are foreign landlords.

I take it this is a deliberately provocative question?! Impossible...not only do Brits buy up property in France and Spain (as non-residents) but the same happens in other countries in the world (Australia, West Coast USA, South Africa...to name but a few). It's a question of economics and nothing to do with social harmony (otherwise politicians and many millionaires would be out of jobs). By the way, I'm a foreigner and only resident in this country...yet I own a property. Because? I'm good for the money and bring in valuable income to the country. I lived in France (as a foreigner) and did the same. Much as we don't like to hear it...money makes the world go (a)round.

It depends on where you are from. The UK does not prohibit any foreign national from buying a house here, because our land law is based upon the feudal system of landholding. Today all land is actually owned by the Queen. When you buy a house you are granted a freehold or leasehold or whatever. This is a technicality but a important one because it means that no one in the uk actually owns the land they live on..
Personally, If someone comes here, works, pays their taxes, saves like everyone else, they should remain free to buy what they wish with their money. This applies to council houses or private houses.
You say 'take the money with them' but they invested their money and happend to make a profit.
It seems to me that your question is full of holes through which any sensible person can see your real motivations in asking it..

Actually as long as they have the money to buy the property where's the problem?....except when they decide to move the whole family over to live there some people might have a real problem with this...because they feel that immagrants are taking over the UK.

Why shouldn't foreigners be allowed to buy British houses?
If this were the case mt husband and I would be screwed. He is American and I am British. I am a student, so my income doesn't count, so our mortgage is based on his income. If he wasn't allowed to buy here, we would be forced to rent and that is undemocratic.
Most people don't realise that a lot of people who come to Britain do not come for the benefits. On the contrary most aren't even able to claim benefits until they become British citizens, which can take up to 10 years.
Don't make life harder for immigrants. Make it fairer (in other words don't favour immigrants either)

Perhaps a quid pro quo (If we can buy in their country they can buy in ours) would be a fair system. As for Council houses there are plans afoot to stop sales all together.
Our country makes a LOT of money from being a totally open and free economy- undermining that is not a good idea. Also most immigrants (especially all my Polish friends imho) are a welcome contribution to our economy and society.

Yes, it should be allowed.
Are you sure about the rule about not being able to buy property in a foreign country?
Don't think so.
