Was anyone else told not to eat cold cuts unless they are heated up to kill off bacteria that can cause listeriosis ( I believe thats what it is called) My sister just had a baby 4 months ago and her doctor never mentioned this to her, but mine did. Anyone else hear of this?

Cold Cuts Pregnancy

Yep. they told me the same thing. I didn't really listen. If I have coldcuts at home, I do microwave them for 30 seconds to heat them up... and then I let them cool down.

I am, however, careful not to eat cold cuts from a place where I don't think it's fresh. I would think that a busy Deli would have fresh meat because it sells quickly - before it can go bad. But if I'm at a little restaurant for lunch, I probably wouldn't eat it.

Hope this helps!

yea i heard this! I also called my sister who has also just had a baby 1 1/2 months ago! to ask her if it was true! I didnt hear it from my doctor i read it in a magazine. and she said she never heard it before. And she said that she used to eat sandwiches almost everyday for lunch and her baby is really healthy. And nothing is wrong with it. so i dont know if it's just an old wives tale or what. but since your doctor mentioned it to you i would listen to him/her!

There are tons of these "don't do this during pregnancy" things out there. What they are referring to is "processed" cold cuts. Bologna, salami, etc.. Cut meats are fine. The study this comes from notes that some chemicals used in the processing and compressing of meats into "molded" shapes (sausages e.g.) can cause birth defects.
But like with anything it is usually VERY high doses.

Hi! I am Iranian and as you know we have 7000 years history in natural medicine.
Why the doctor told you, and did tell your sister is not important.

Your doctor may found that 'Cold cuts' are not goo d for "YOU"!

Cold cuts as not good for me too! I am "man" and not pregnant!
Cold cuts does not do with 'sex' or 'race'

Cold cuts is 'inner factor'
Cold cuts is affecting very harmful to whole system of people who are sensitive; and may cause a person become parallelize or even DEATH. So it is very important to consider your doctor advise.
IF you like you may send email to me, I will ask you many personal questions, and i will tell you what to eat and drink and what to give to your child.

I haven't personally been pregnant, but several of my friends were told not to eat deli meat or cold cuts for that same reason. Here's an online article about the problem. Just a clip ... it says to avoid the problem:

• Don't eat cold cuts or deli meat, refrigerated pâtés or meat spreads, or refrigerated smoked or pickled fish unless they're cooked until they're steaming hot (say, on a pizza or in a casserole). And even though hot dogs are precooked, be sure to cook them until they're steaming hot. Canned or "shelf-stable" products that don't need to be refrigerated are fine to eat.

Here's the entire article:

You know, I've seen this on Yahoo!Answers before, but it's something new to me. If the doctor says don't eat lunch meat, don't eat lunch meat. Get a roast or ham or whole chicekn and make sandwiches or snacks from that. Good luck and Congrats.

well..i don't know about the bacteria. I was told you shouldn't eat cold cuts because of the nitrates in the lunch meat. which really sucks since i crave Subway all throughout my pregnancy. So i kept it to a minimum. like every two weeks or so.

During pregnancy, processed meats (including cold cuts, hot dogs, most bacon) should be heated thoroughly before eating, or not eaten at all. They can contain bacteria, not to mention they also contain preservatives (sodium nitrite) that can potentially cause harm to the fetus if eaten in large amounts.
