The Russian writer Leo Tolstoy novel of a doomed adulteress "Anna Karenina" first published in in periodical installments from 1875 to 1877 has the opening sentence “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” The novel is the complex and variegated story of the making and breaking of families.

Tolstoy considered this book his first true novel. The character of Anna was likely inspired, in part, by Maria Hartung (1832–1919), the elder daughter of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. This novel had various Film, TV or theatrical adaptations.♥
