I haven't seen the movie yet, but I definately can recommend the book. I've alwasy found that if the movie loses you, then the book must have had more details, and I think that is the case here. The book is very clear and easy to understand...
Here's a summary from IMDB though
Plot Summary for
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
The story tells the investigation started by symbologist Robert Langdon and a good looking cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, around the murder of a Museum Louvre's curator. In fact, the unfortunate murdered man was Sophie's grandfather, and the corpse was founded with a series of symbols and codes, like a pentagram and a Fibonacci number sequence. But police detective Fache will begin to chase Langdon, who escapes after receive a warning about the captain's real intentions. Sophie has with her a kind of key with dots and number 24 engraved on it, which opens to her and Langdon a big complex investigation, that involves a supposedly heretic theory: JesusChristh and Mary Magdalene were, in fact, a couple which give rise a daughter, named Sara. A millenarian sect called The Priory of Sion, has kept for centuries the secret of that matter. A masochist and kind of psychopath albino monk, Sibilas, an Opus Dei member, will chase Langdon and Shophie as well, in order to impede that they solve the mystery of Christ and Mary Magdalene, and also the real meaning and location of the Holy Grial. A passionate British researcher, will help Langdon in his quest, revealing them several symbolisms at Da Vinci's master work The Last Supper, traveling to mythical places in the UK, like The Church Temple, where is believed that a group of Templars Knights are buried, and Sir Isaac Newton's tomb at Westminster Abbey, where are located some of the main keys to solve the Holy Grail's mystery. SPOILER
The curator ar the museum is a member of a group, the priori of scion, that protectcts the location of the holy grail. He is killed by members of opus dei who are trying to learn the location of the grail. Before he dies he contacts linquist Robert Langdon to discuss some of the writings Langdon has come up wth on related subjects. This of course makes langdon a suspect in the curator's murder. Long story short, the curator's granddaughter believes that Langdon did not kill her Grandfather but she wants to know who did and she thinks Langdon is supposed to help her find out who did it. She is right. They go looking for clues and find that DaVinci was also a member of the Priori of Scion and that by looking at his art they can discover where the grail may be. They figure if they find the grail then they will find the killer along the way. They are right again. The clues eventually lead them to every suspected home of the grail trying to learn the secret code to the codex puzzle they found in the curator's lock box. Inside is the location of the grail on a piece of papyrus that if wet will disentigrate and if the codex is broken or damaged that will happen. Eventually they wind up in the hands of a key member of Opus Dei who takes them to the last suspected home of the grail but it turns out that it is not there and he is figured out as the person who ordered the killing. The police bust in having connected the man to the murders and arrest him instead od Langdon and the girl. The lady in charge of the chappel at the end tells Langdon and the girl the whole truth, at least in the book, the holy grail is not the chalice as in a cup but the chalice as in a daughter. Supposedly Mary Magdalene was Jesus's wife and they had a daughter who Mary took with her out of the country to France and then to the UK. Opus Dei, a Catholic group was trying to destroy the evidence of this idea. It turns out the phrases Holy Grail and Royal Blood are only a space away. The daughter of Christ would have been a princess of the house of David and a rightful heir to the thrown of Jeruselem. Her mother would have been the likely head of the Church. They were a threat to upset the Catholic order of things. The Knights Templar supposedly found this out when they sacked Jerusalem in the first Crusade. That is why they had to be killed. But they were replaces by the Priori of Scion and the Masons. Opus Dei is the Catholic response to the Priori of Scion. Cutting to the quick. The girl is the heir to Jesus as is the boy at the chappel and the old lady. They are descendants of Jesus. The proof of their claim is the body of Mary Magdalene and the writings about her daughter and her. They were once buried under the chappel, beneath the star of David. The remains left with the Curator when they felt it safer to separate because the girl's mother and father were killed for who they were. The remains are now buried under the attriun at the Louvre. the way you know is that the combination of the masculine triangle pointing up is twith the feminine triangle pointing down. That is why the remains uses to be under the star of David. there is a lot more but you saw the movie and should probably read the book. The sum is the Catholics hate pagans and will do anything to silence the idea that Jesus and Mary were a couple and she was his equal in the relationship. She is supposed to be in the painting of the Last Supper.

Best way to understand is to read the book. This is what happens with a lot of movies that started out as books. You can't cram a 300 plus page novel into an hour and a half/two hours without omitting a few key details.
If you don't have time to read the book, though...

It was just a murder mystery. What part don't you get? The curator for the Louvre was murdered because he belonged to a secret group that protected the holy grail. The person who had him killed wanted the holy grail. Turns out it was the charming, gimpy scholar who had him killed. And then, at the end, Tom Hanks's character figures out the secret and finds the holy grail (it was under the pyramid). Read the book, it's more detailed.

I have heard a lot of people that saw the movie have been confused. My advice to you would be to read the book. I hear they explain some things very well, and a lot more in depth than they did in the movie!
Also, PLEASE remember, this book is FICTION!! Even the author of the book was on TV telling people, that the controversy about this book and it's ideas is absurd. He wrote it as a fictional story!

Jesus married Mary and had kids. This goes against the Catholic church. Some dudes hid the facts so the family wouldnt be killed off. That girl that runs around with Tom Hanks is Jesus' ancestor...thats about it.
