I'm the mother of identical twins so I hear these types of questions alot:
1. Identical twins (monozygotic) are from one egg that splits. All pregnancies have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins. This is not impacted by age, ethnicity, fertility drugs, or family history.
2. Fraternal twins (dizygotic) occur when the female produces two eggs in the same cycle. Some factors include fertility drugs, higher maternal age, ethnicity (for instance more common in African Americans less common in Asians), and family history.
3. Because it is up to the female to produce two eggs at once a family history of fraternal twins is only relevant on the female's side.
I had no family history of twins, was "young" (25), and wasn't on fertility drugs so I was quite surprised when we learned it was twins. It wasn't until I read more about them from reputable sources that I learned how many myths there are out there (like skipping generations, etc)

Generally twins skip a generation, as with everything this is not always the case. I am a triplet fraternal and maternal (the other two (boys) are identical and i am obviosuly not) My Fiance's Father is an identical twin. Therefore there was a major chance me and my fiance were going to be blessed with a multiple birth and wouldn't you know it, 3 years ago our beautiful fraternal B/G twins came into the world. In very few cases there isn't either a hint of multiple births in the family history this is more likely with fraternal twins (its gotta start somewhere right). Although it is usually from the mothers side, which means u do have a higher chance of conceiving twins but not as much as if it was onthe females side of the family history.

It has no impact on your chances of having twins. Identical twins aren't hereditary and fraternal twins are dependent on the mothers genes not the fathers genes. That's why they say twins skip a generation because if twins are in the father's genes then the daughters could have twins but if the mother has genes in the family it won't necessarily skip a generation. Good luck.

I am a twin and I have twins. I was told it was very odd for that to happen. I am identical and my twins are a very rare for of identical called mono-mono twins (one placenta and no membrane seperating them)
Identical twins are in no way determined by genetics its just a floke thing. Its possible you could have twins, but its also very possible you might not. Fraternal twins are determined by the mother's side not the fathers. That is what my doc told me anyway.

Twins that are genetic only run in the females family, not the males. In order to conceive twins you would need to realease two eggs instead of one....therefore it all up to you, not your husband. If you had a mother with twins or a grandmother with twins, then obviously the women in your family would be known for releasing two eggs...that is what makes it "run in families" Hope this helps

it is my understanding that the FATHER determines the sex of the child and the MOTHER determines how many there will be so if you dont have any twins that run in your family that chance of having twins is very unlikely. but as the one lady said that you could get identical twins if your egg splits into two.

Fraternal twins (two eggs fertilized at the same time) are hereditary. whereas Identical twins are a fluke of nature. If they are identical (which I am guessing they are not) then your chances are as anybody else's chance.
If they are fraternal then you have a better chance but I think it is more if you have twins on your side, because you would need to be the one releasing more than one egg at a time.

I have 14 year old fraternal twins. Identical twins are more likely to just be a fluke because the egg must split to make two....but fraternal twins are supposed to be hereditary because the mom must release more than one egg and that trait is more likely to be passed on........ Having twins on the father's side is less likely to matter than on the mom's side.............it just means you have the same chances as everyone else

My understanding is that, genetically, twins run in the MOTHER'S side of the family. So unless you have twins on your side, it's unlikely.
