You need to install the driver for the new printer.

I'm assuming you're using windows in some form, so window might have the driver already. But, if possible use the install disk that came with the printer and follow the directions. With some printers you install the software first, (all the printers I've install for the last five years or so ask that you install the software first), then connect the printer at some point in the install to complete it. Some want the printer connected and turned on and then insert the disk and have windows find the drivers.

Good luck

It depends upon your operating system and the printer in question. Many printer profiles already exist in Windows XP and Mac OSX. Connecting many standard HP Laserjets, for instance, don't require the additional management and monitor tools that come on the printer's "install CD". Plug and play, the OS recognizes the printer, it suggests a particular driver, and away you go.

Of course, if you want the graphical tools that often come on those CD's, you'll need to install to get them. But many times they are just visually nice ways to monitor ink level, etc., and don't provide that much more than the OS already provides.

Hope that helps. Best to you.

You normally need a CD.

Windows XP has printer-driver programs for most printers, so a CD isn't needed for this. However, most printers come with some programs on CD for doing things like providing a list of current print-jobs with the option to cancel jobs, scanning documents, etc.

Depends on the printer and the o/s. If you're using Windows XP it contains generic drivers for most of the popular brands of printers. When you connect the printer XP should detect it and install the appropriate software automatically. Otherwise you will have to load the drivers manually, the install wizard will tell you how to do it.

Usually it is true, that the appropriate software drivers on a CD, are required. If your operating system is up to date, then it is possible that a driver can be found inside. Using the "Plug and (pray?) Play of Microsoft Windows might well do the trick. Other than that, try going to the web page of the manufacturer of your printer. Look up their support area, and locate the correct driver software.

Many new printers will auto-configure from preloaded drivers the OS keeps on hand, but almost all will come with a CD. Maintenance software is an example of something that wouldn't auto-configure.

If you don't have a CD, but have access to the internet, do a search on the model and you should find downloadable software to support it.

well it depends. you can go to the add new hardware in the control panel and since the printer is connected to the pc it will detect it. however, it might need the drivers which is why you would need the cd. if you don't have the cd, you can try searching the printers manufacturer website. they usually have drivers you can download there. good luck!
