Any opinions: Is there a way to skip buying a hand-held diagnostics reader and hook up a laptop direct to the car's OBDII port (say, with special software)? Thank you.

Auto Tap soft wear and cable will set you back $300 dollars and your lap top. Pirate soft wear and home made obd2 cable about $85 dollars and your laptop. Northern tool code reader Harbor freight code reader both clears codes too and reads freeze frame data. $35.00 Oh by the way you can hardly read the screen in the sun older lap tops.

I agree with what John Paul is saying to a point. Anything newer than about 2004 though you are kind of screwed depending upon maker as most went to a CAN network and most scanners won't communicate anymore to the newer cars.
