Thanksgiving was the official day that the Native Americans and the Pilgrims broke bread in peace to declare national and possibly international peace with the Natives' country.

When religious groups from England and Europe were banished by the catholic church, they set out, unprepared, to find a new home.

They arrived in what is now New England and suffered massive casualties because of unfamiliar environmental conditions and crop failure.

Then, the next year, the indiginous people taught the new settlers some basic agricultural techniques so that they could survive. The resulting crop was more than enough for survival.

Thanksgiving was established to commemorate that harvest; giving thanks to God for their good fortune in finding help from the indians and having the means to survive the winter. It was the turning point for the success of the settlement.

I wish people would stop saying "and then the pilgrims slaughtered all the natives" because it isn´t true. The pilgrims who celebrated the first Thanksgiving with the Native Americans did NOT kill them, but rather colonists who came years afterwards.

When the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, they found they didn't have the necessary supplies to make it through the harsh winter, and the Indians helped the colonists by giving them food, shelter, etc. For this the Pilgrims are thankful to the Indians who were masters of the land.

You kicked the prudes out of your country, and when the winter came they were all about to starve to death, but the friendly neighborhood indians brought food and they all sat down together and gave thanks for their new friends, new land, and to God. then the next year rolled around and the pilgrims slaughtered all the indians and just took their food. Great american history. Gotta love it!
