According to the IATA guide on the Delta Airlines website:

Connecting in France, British Overseas Nationals do not need a visa.

Arriving in Japan, British Overseas Nationals do not need a visa for stays shorter than 90 days.

You may wish to confirm these details with your nearest embassy or consulate.

No... if you have no plans to stay in Japan.. there is no need to apply for visa..you will have an instructions where to go after landing ..for connecting flights and it is very smooth..just make sure what terminal are you going to and they would give you a free bus ticket and do not need to fall in line to get a boarding pass in Main department..they have a small counter to get your boarding pass where your airline is..

good day!

You are better of asking the French and Japanese embassies in the country you are currently in.
