Travis's answer is good, but who has time to wait for the wood to swell? Drill the holes, yes. But get a set of feathers and wedges. You MIGHT find these at a hardware store. Drill the holes with a hammer drill per Travis's eloquent directions. Place the feathers and wedges in the holes and tap the wedges down into the holes with a sledge hammer. Move from one end of the block to the other and then back again as many times as it takes for the force of the wedges to exceed the strength of the structure of the stone. This will give you the most accurate split.

The way the ancient Egyptians did it was to drill several parallel holes along the axis where you want the granite split. Drive some very dry wood stakes tightly into the holes. Pour water onto the wood, this makes it swell and... crack... a nicely split chunk of rock.

With the cost of granite, I don't recommend doing it yourself. Get a pro. But, if you insist,...
Rent a rock saw. Try Home Depot.

Renting a saw would be the best option. Use a diamond blade it will cut cleaner and be easier to use. Also check with landscape or stone yards they may have a splitter you could rent to make it much easier.

Better get the block to a factory to cut it for you.. 12" thick is pretty thick stuff there.. you need a water jet to slice through that..

Damn....better get some dynamite......I wouldn't try it myself. I'd be afraid of ruining the entire block!!!!(of stone)
