I heard earlier that prison inmates and ex inmates we're suing the government because when they we're in prison they we're made to come off heroin without the medication for withdrawal symptoms, saying it is classed as abuse, i think that is awful the drug addicts can rob places and people to get money for their fix, and was their choice to go on the stuff, yet they are suing for as much money they can get, what right do they have, also i am a nurse and feel that the smokers are victimised as they can't smoke the doctors won't always give them nicotine patches, yet if a drug addict came in the doctors are running around after them, they take up valuable bed space, when the bed could go to someone who really is ill and needs it not just someone who took an overdose, what are your views

Yeah, this is really tricky. Yes, they are in prison because they have done something wrong but you, as a nurse, must be well aware of the agony of going through cold turkey, so are we really so sadistic that we will allow to sit back and watch someone in pain?
Being a drug addict isn't fun. Yes, people choose to take drugs that first time but no-one chooses to be hooked on heroin for example. They are addicts.
Finally, the people who come into hospital, after OD'ing. Yes, they take up a bed but would you prefer them to OD in the middle of the A & E waiting room?
Don't know what the answer is but they are only suing the government because the government and the EU put these laws in place for them to do so.

My view? Let's combat poverty, and make real changes to our social systems that actually support people, rather than working against them.
I don't really get the suing thing... but then I am Canadian. My belief is that yes... a lot of things in this world is choice, be they smoking cigarettes, or shooting heroin, or anything in between. HOWEVER, we have a responsibility to treat others humanely, regardless of how their personal choices have affected their health.
A smoker, in prison (in Canada, at least) would be able to access health care if they developed cancer. As heroin addiction has dramatic and painful withdrawal symptoms, I believe that heroin addicts should be able to access appropriate care. It is up to the people that YOU vote for to determine what appropriate care entails.
Whatever your views, and where ever it is that you live, make sure your voice is heard. Speak with your MP or MLA (or whatever) and get your view across.
Best Wishes ~ Andrea

Tough call. Some of these addicts are the worst of humanity--rapists, murderers, child molesters. On the other hand, they are going through agony from the withdrawl of a drug their bodies have depended on to function normally. Personally, I think they deserve nothing better than to sweat it out, given the pain they've caused so many people. But, our justice system is to designed to protect against cruel and unusual punishment, and there are rehab facilities in the free population to cope with these same addictions. I guess the answer depends on where the justices fall on the issue...time will tell.

Let them suffer as those around them had to. When did prison become a rehab facility? It's supposed to be touch and cruel. That is the type of people that are in there. They don't deserve the same rights and treatment honest people do.

dear you said you are nurse you know rehab addiction needs providing good environment and care I suppose the next steps are correctly applied, like lowering drug conc. in the single dose , and no. of doses per day, maybe using placebo ,if you are sure this is not the real steps , seems to have problem here.

But you must understand that drug addiction is a disease and like all diseases, it is essential that the sufferers get the right treatment.
