I have a 60 gig hard disk I want to use in another pc I`m setting up for one of my kids. The problem is it the size. It is a Samsung but it will not format to more than 32 gig. I`ve been onto the manufacturer. But they are as much help as a snowball in hell. I`ve tried everything I can think of. Jumper settings etc etc. Still cant get it over 32 gig. I did think of a drive overlay. Any help out there???? Would be much appreciated

Just partition the drive into two 30 gb slices.

Some operating systems, including Windows XP, will not allow you to format a drive in FAT32 mode any larger than 32GB. You can read the official article from Microsoft I included as a source.

I ran into this problem years ago. What I did at that time was ran the FDISK utility and partitioned my hard drive (which was a 40GB) into a C: logical drive that was 8GB and a D: logical drive that was 32GB in size.

However, now Windows offers the ability to format the drive in NTFS mode instead of FAT32. I did that on my more recent drives and have had no problems ever since.

Keep in mind that if you have older software that still runs in DOS mode, you may run into problems using NTFS formatted drives. Windows XP does not seem to handle the older software well.

1) try deleting all partitions 2)Try formatting in NTFS from a newer PC and operating system. OR you have a bad Hard drive.

What operating systems are you using? Older version of Windows and older motherboards have a limit on to the size of a drive.

you will need to find which mother board you have and go to manufactures web site and see if you can get a flash update for the mother board as it is the mother board that is not recognising the size of you hard drive

Make sure you can see the full size in your BIOS setting.

You can format it into NTFS filesystem to get the full size.

Your bios is probably the problem. How old is the system? And what OS are you using?
