A male is more colorful than a female. males should not be housed together since they will fight to death. male and female only house together when breeding only since htem lae will try to kill the female.....
The female can be differentiated by the body shape, fin length, colour and some special characteristics.
1. They usually have a bigger belly, bulging from eggs.
2. Fins are short, no matter whether they are long-finned type or short-finned.
3. Colour are usually not as bright and appears duller. But this is not always the case.
4. They have a ovipositor for laying eggs, which appears as a white spot under the belly.
5. Usually exhibit the horizontal stripes, even when they are not stressed.
6. Their pectoral fins are not as long as males. Usually short like the female above.
7. Vertical stripes appear when they see a male

Not to be a butt, but there are males with short fins they are call plakat males and there are also females with long fins this is caused by a mutation. And also just so every one knows there are some females who are just as beautifully colored as the males. But on average The males have long fins and the females have short fins and yes most of the time the males are much more colorful then females...LOL Just thought I'd throw that ou there! Oh, and female can flair their gills to. The females also tend to have horizontal (when stressed or being submissive) or vertical stripes (vertical when ready to breed)

The males have the beautiful loooong fins. The females arent so brilliant and have short fins.
Another idea: get a mirror and put it up to the tank/bowl. If it seems to frill out and want to attack it's reflection, it's most likely a male. The males can't stand other males - even if it's just a reflection!
