You cant do it that way. You need to install XP on that computer. There are drivers that will not match up. There is no real way around it.
I am sorry, I misread you question. Are you trying to install an upgrade version of Xp or a Full version? When you said it failed, what is failing? Are you getting any errors? Does your computer meet the minimum requirements?

i m sure the problem is with the drivers as u have installed the harddisk from friends system so the default drivers (of windows) according to ur friend system specification got installed and now when u run the drivers get conflict and thats why it restarts reinstall the os from ur system itself or the automatic repair option in windows bootable cd or go in console mode stop services (if services r running if they are running there is a windows install there on ur system which can work properly)
moreover ur question is not clear totally where is the error coming it boots up or not

Your discription of the problem is a little vague but I think it is a driver problem. If you installed XP from a DISK from anouther pc. Then you may just need to repair the current install with a licensed copy of windows. Then start the painstaking process of looking up and downloading drivers.

You remove the drivers which are not compatible with your hardware and install the drivers of your hardware. When you installed Win XP on your hard disk using your friend's PC, drivers pertaining to his PC's mothernboard, video, audio etc got installed in your hard disc alongwith the OS. Since these hardwares are different in your PC, hence, you are facing the problems. The best and easiest thing to do is to format the hard disc and install Win XP in your PC itself. It will resolve all your problems.

I need to know some stuff you are not mentioning, but i think your PC doesn't have capacity enough, or your hard disk is old, or you need more RAM. The thing is you need to install from the CD in YOUR PC to detect all the devices that maybe are not the same in the other PC. The other thing is maybe the CD is bad. I wish i had more info baby.

When you install a OS. a registry is crated in your system off all your hardware. you can also say that a address of all your hardware (peripherals) are register. as u have install Os on some another computer so all hardware address of that system have register. when u changed the computer the new computer hardware address did not match so u not able to start computer.
Try to install Os on your computer only..

I Assume that you have instaledd the os with ur friends system connected to ur hard disk and installed all motherboard drivers.
I think u woulsd have got the error "disk not found retry, ignore, cancel"and it restarts
Check in your system cabinet whether you have connected the hard disk ide cable and power cable correctly.
Then, make the hard disk as first boot in your BIOS,
I think it will work now,

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
