A Blackberry is a 'Smartphone'. That is it is a cell phone with a proprietary cell phone operating system that has been enhanced to allow for other applications to be built into the memory. This would include things like a calendar, contacts, memos, email, etc.

Generally, with a 'Smartphone', you are stuck with the applications that are built in. Some Smartphones allow you to add extra programs you buy from the phone manufacturer. But they are expensive, and not exactly cutting edge. If the manufacturer doesn't offer a program you need, you will have to do without.

A Palm Treo is a true handheld computer with a phone attached. The same kind of applications as in a smartphone are built into it..But the Treo differs in a VERY important way.

Because it is a fully programmable computer, you can buy inexpensive programs for it just about anywhere software is sold. (Test this out yourself, go to any office supply store and ask for programs for the Treo, then ask for programs for the Blackberry). There are also MANY free programs go here for them :

I have replaced the built in calendar and the built in memo pad with different apps because I didn't like the calendar and the memo pad built into the TREO, i also have added a full fledged accounting program, several free games, a database application, a word processor, electronic spreadsheet, and I read ebooks that I download from the internet. Try doing all that with a Blackberry!

The difference between a Blackberry and a TREO is power and flexibility. True, the Treo is a bit more expensive (just a little bit), but if I need my Treo to do something, chances are, I can do it.

On the other hand if you can live with the built in apps and are willing to pay good money for programs I get for free or for little cost. And if you are certain you won't outgrow the built in apps, then you can save money by buying a smartphone.
